How to Leave Files in Place When Importing in FCP X

One big advantage of editing in FCP X is that you can have the software manage all of your media for you in its library structure.

While that’s great for beginners and casual editors, professional workflows often require a bit more control over where the media is stored. For example, if you’re working with footage from a RED camera, chances are you, you’ll want to keep those files stored on a dedicated external drive.

But as soon as FCP X recognizes that you’re importing RED (or Alexa, Canon, Sony, etc) footage, it tries to force you to copy those files into a managed library and the option to “Leave Files in Place” in the import window is grayed out.

Watch this quick tutorial to understand why “Leave Files in Place” is sometimes grayed out in the FCP X import window and how to work around it.
