WEB HOSTING

Bluehost

Bluehost has top-notch customer service, which is arguably the most important feature in a web host. I’ve contacted support at odd hours more than once and each time had my issue resolved quickly. They handle this WordPress site beautifully – I have no complaints a couple of years in!

SOFTWARE I USE

Frame.io

If you’ve spend any time on this site, then you know I absolutely love Frame.io! Both because it makes video collaboration incredibly easy and because the whole team is dedicated to publishing top notch post and workflow information. I’ve used Frame.io for everything from dailies management to editorial notes on feature films.

Adobe Creative Cloud

Yes, the subscription price can sting a bit, but the combination of Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, and Illustrator is a powerful one. I’ve cut the majority of my recent project in Premiere Pro and love that it’s gaining a solid foothold in the professional post market.

Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve

Resolve is simply an incredible application. I use it nearly exclusively to transcode and sync my media. It’s also a very powerful NLE in its own right. And of course, it’s the industry standard for color correction. You can also get the free version right here.

Final Draft 11

The standard in scriptwriting software. In addition to editing, I also write for film and television and this is my go-to software.

HARDWARE I USE

Apple Macbook Pro

I’ve edited every project I’ve done on a Macbook Pro of some kind. All the way from miniDV tapes and FireWire cables to 4K+ footage and USB-C ports. I do all my transcoding on these laptops too.

WD MyPassport

I absolutely love these little drives. They’re durable, portable, can hold a whopping 4TB and making editing on the go a breeze. I always carry my proxy media around on one of these, and sometimes even the RAW media too.

BeatsX Wireless Earphones

I’m a big fan of these headphones! I prefer earbuds in general and I love how these fit snuggly and block out nose. Plus it’s great to just pull them out of my ears and let them hang around my neck when I need to step away from my computer for a few minutes.

Blue Snowball iCE Condenser Microphone, Cardioid – Black

I use this plug and play microphone to record my youtube videos. I love that all I have to do is plug it in and it’s instantly recognized and ready to go.

Blackmagic Design Web Presenter

I use this hardware encoder to live stream my edits when the director and I can’t be in the same room. Check out the step by step guide on how to set it up.

Blackmagic Design Teranex Mini Smart Panel

This video panel for the Blackmagic Design Web Presenter allows for easier controls and works as a monitor so you can see your video feed. I recommend it. Plus, you can use it for other Blackmagic products as well (it pulls on and off).

BOOKS I LOVE

Avid Editing: A Guide for Beginning and Intermediate Users

This is the THE book on Avid Editing. It teaches you the program from the ground up and provides invaluable workflow and organization tips for both AEs and editors new to Avid.

In the Blink of an Eye: A Perspective on Film Editing, 2nd Edition

Walter Murch’s seminal book explains why cuts work, while offering tons of insight from one of the world’s most respected film editors.

Directing Actors: Creating Memorable Performances for Film & Television

This clear, straight forward look at working with actors is a great resource for directors, writers, and editors alike. The more you understand about what’s happening on set, the better you’ll be able to interpret and craft performances in the edit. I love this book!
